What’s In A Name?

If you’ve followed pro wrestling for as long as I have, you’ll know that sometimes terrible gimmicks get over and great gimmicks can fall flat. A wrestling ballroom dancer going by the name of Fandango should stink to high heaven, but I think he’s going to be a lot more successful than people are assuming.

He’s going to unify the fans, who are far too used to ‘tweeners’ these days, characters who aren’t really faces or heels. Everybody is going to hate this arrogant and flamboyant Superstar. He’s also being fast-tracked to the big time with a Wrestlemania match against the hugely popular Chris Jericho. Most importantly he can back up his words with his in-ring performance. Anyone who has seen Fandango/Johnny Curtis wrestle in NXT will know that he is more than capable of going toe-to-toe with Y2J.

The build up to this match, much like the rest of the Wrestlemania 29 undercard, has been a little rushed. Luckily this is a classic cocky villain vs. confident good guy stand off, it’s so simple it could have worked 10 years ago, 20 years ago or even 30 years ago. I expect this match to be written off by most people as just filler, but I think it has the potential to be one of the night’s highlights.
