Traveling to work on a dull and misty morning makes me think of the third and fourth Dark Tower novels (The Waste Lands then sections of Wizard and Glass) by Stephen King. Our main characters are escaping from a post-apocalyptic city via a robot mono-rail with a deranged personality. The walls of the carriage are lined with high resolution screens that display the shattered landscape they’re passing over. Warped monsters crawl across the cracked and burnt desert beneath them and Blaine the Mono takes great delight in highlighting this hellish country to our cast of heroes. Whilst my commute doesn’t take me through any irradiated ruins inhabited by monstrosities, the darkness and heavy fog does get me wondering what lies hidden from view as I pass by.
